Early treatment of alopecia

Early treatment of balding is the right thing to do, especially if you have a history of alopecia in your family. If one of your parents/grandparents do suffer from alopecia (having a significant hair loss without a specific medical problem), then take early measures! DO NOT WAIT to loose a significant amount of hair, because medical treatment oh genetic balding in advanced stages is not possible – the hair will not regrow in areas where it totally disappeared. Medication can only work where there is still some hair.

First step is, of course, diagnosis – this is extremely important for a successful treatment and you can read about how to correctly diagnose hair loss here. In this article is about the first medical measures you can take for early genetic balding (pattern alopecia), which means:

You can read here about FDA-approved medications for common baldness, a quite comprehensive description of their use, results and potential side effects. Two things have to be mentioned here:

  1. first is that an integrated treatment, a synergistic use of 2-3 types of this drugs is extremely effective: combine a hair loss inhibitor with a growth stimulant.
  2. second is that wherever there’s still hair, hair loss can be slowed down and in some cases hair regrowth is still possible.

A hair loss inhibitor is a drug which inhibits DHT production in your body, and for this is Propecia.

Propecia (Proscar, Finasteride) is a licensed medicine for the treatment of men with male pattern baldness (androgenetic alopecia) to increase hair growth and prevent further hair loss. Propecia is not licensed for use in women, however, numerous studies showed results in women too. Propecia is very helpful in reversing the miniaturization (thining) process of hair, which cause genetic baldness. A 5 year clinical study gave the following results: 90% of participants saw a visible improvement, divided into 48% who saw regrowth of hair and 42% who saw no further hair loss. If you want to stop an early balding process, start taking Propecia in the first place! Finasteride requires a prescription from a doctor. Generic and cheaper versions are available on the market.

Rogaine (minoxidil) stimulates hair growth, but the best results are noted when it is used in conjunction with Propecia. Minoxidil is generic and you do not need a doctor’s prescription.

One more thing: persevere!

Hair loss treatment take time to work. Usually a six months to a year period is needed to see results. If the drugs are discontinued, the process will revert and the balding will be resumed.
