Understanding Hair Loss

To understand hair loss repair procedures, you need to first understand hair structure and hair loss mechanisms.

The basics of hair

About hair and hair loss. The skin is the largest human organ and is composed of 3 primary structural layers: the epidermis (the outer layer), the dermis and the hypodermis (the internal fatty layer). Beneath the epidermis there are blood and lymphatic vessels, nerve endings, muscles, a multitude of glands (sweat, sebaceous, exocrine), and hair follicles.

The blood flow provide nourishment for hair growth  – and for this a good blood circulation is critical and requires a good amount of oxygen and nutrients. The hair growing from it’s follicle it is lubricated by sebum, the secretions of the sebaceous glands; sebum keeps hair and skin supple, which provides for a shiny coating and a healthy appearance of the hair. The equilibrium of the glands activity is extremely important: increased sebum secretion is associated with the “oily” hair, development of acne and other skin problems.

So you understand why a healthy and good looking hair requires that blood and nutrients reach the dermal area, and  this needs good hair nutrition. If the amount of nutrients decrease, hair cells develop at a much slower rate. Slower cellular activity produces thinner hair, which in time will result in bad looking and even falling hair.

The basics of hair loss

There are many causes of hair loss (see causes of hair loss), which differ with genetics, sex, lifestyle and health factors. The most important cause is both male pattern baldness and female pattern baldness, affecting almost 50% of adult males and 25% of adult women. This cause of hair loss is directly related to levels of DHT, your hair’s nutrition and proper scalp hygiene. DHT, or Dihydrotestosterone, is a sex steroid and androgen hormone and causes 95% of all hair loss. DHT miniaturizes hair follicles by shortening the anagen (growth) phase and/or lengthening the telogen (resting) phase – see more about hair growing cycles. Under the influence of this factors the hair follicles become progressively smaller and eventually disappear – this process is called “miniaturization.” For this reason, once increased hair loss occurs the first measures for healthy hair re-growth is DHT inhibiting by using special products and medication.

A good scalp hygiene is another factor which can promote good quality hair growing, by hindering the sebum building on the skin surface. The sebaceous oil can collect and harden in the hair follicle, causing a sebum plug that impede hair growth.
